Andrea Gaines
Director, Virginia Corps
Andrea Gaines is the Director of Virginia Corps, a program created in 2002 that helps put Virginians in touch with a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. Appointed in 2006 by Governor Tim Kaine, she works to promote knowledge of and participation in Virginia Corps by coordinating volunteer efforts in areas of education, public safety and emergency management. Andrea's passion and commitment to volunteerism was developed early in her life. One of her favorite quotes is from Margaret Mead -- "Never doubt that a small group of dedicated people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
Andrea formerly enjoyed a 10-year career in Broadcast Journalism. She received fast track promotions through a series of positions with several network affiliates in Virginia, including roles as Assignment Editor, Producer and Assistant News Director. She also has experience in radio and served as Public Relations Specialist for the City of Richmond.
Andrea is a Summa Cum Laude graduate with a Master of Art in Mass Communications and Journalism from Norfolk State University, and received a Bachelor of Art in History with an emphasis in Afro Studies from the University of Virginia.
Strong in community involvement, Andrea is a past member of the Albemarle County School Board's Equity & Diversity Committee, an active member of the Fluvanna County NAACP, and volunteers for her church, Faith Christian Center International. She is a former Vice President of the Virginia Association of Broadcasters. During college, she was a founding member of the Student Board for the Virginia Festival of American Film.
Andrea is married and lives in Fluvanna County, Virginia with her husband Donald.
